Kit first realized she wanted to ski the big stuff while standing atop a mountain in Sikkim, India, in 1998. Looking around at the majestic Himalayan peaks where so many others had come in search of life-changing moments, Kit had her own epiphany when she couldn't shake one thought: Why didn't she bring her skis?
It was then she decided to focus on ski mountaineering and began refining her skills so that she could ski anything, anywhere in the world. And focus she did: she now has several first descents to her name, including the first ski descent of the Polish Glacier on Aconcagua in Argentina, first female ski descent of Vinson Massif in Antarctica, and the first woman to ski from the summit of Mt. Everest, Nepal. In addition to being an accomplished skier and ski mountaineer, Kit is an experienced rock climber and has added road and mountain bike racing to her summertime endeavors.
During a 2010 ski expedition to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska, Kit skied the highest mountain in the Brooks Range/Arctic Refuge and then 60 miles north to the Beaufort Sea. Of this journey Kit says, "It is the one place in the world that I have been that I know I will go back to. The Arctic Refuge has the wildest silence of anyplace I've visited and I believe strongly in protecting the entire ecosystem with a wilderness designation."
When she's not skiing, climbing or biking, Kit is busy raising her two young daughters in a way that encourages their appreciation for the natural world and gives them the skills to move around comfortably in the outdoors. Both Grace and Tia love to hike, ski, camp, climb, and grow vegetables with their Mom and Dad.
Combining a passion for exploration, mountains and skiing, Hilaree has traveled to some of the most exotic mountain ranges on earth. Outside Magazine named her one of the most adventurous women in the world of sports.
She's skied from the Himalayan summit of Cho Oyu in Tibet and climbed and skied several high peaks in Bolivia and Argentina. Elsewhere, she's cut turns on remote volcanoes in the Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia, in Mongolia, Pakistan, Lebanon, as well as many first descents in the tight couloirs of Baffin Island.
Born and raised in the Northwest, Hilaree began skiing at age 3 at Steven's Pass in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. Eventually she moved to the Chamonix Valley of France where she learned most of what she needed to know in order to take her skiing skills to the next level- ski mountaineering.
In addition to her travels as an athlete for The North Face, Hilaree is a mother to two young boys, and although they have changed her life dramatically, her passion for the mountains has not abated. Hilaree lives with her family in Telluride, Colorado and finds her sanity in the beautiful San Juan Mountains.
Ingrid Backstrom grew up in Seattle, Washington, where she spent her winters skiing down the nearby mountains and her summers hiking back up them on backpacking trips with her parents and two younger brothers.
After graduating from Whitman College, the call of the mountains drew her to Squaw Valley, California, to put in what she thought would be a yearlong stint as a ski bum. It only took a few freeskiing contests, however, for Ingrid to realize that she had found her niche, and that she'd be calling the mountains home for a long, long time.
Since then, she has been awarded Breakthrough Performance in 2005, 4-time Best Female Performance, and 6-time Reader Poll winner for her roles in 7 Matchstick Productions films at the annual Powder Magazine Video Awards, in addition to appearing in the 2007 documentary Steep. Travels with The North Face have allowed her to make first descents in Baffin Island, Greenland, and 20,000ft Reddomaine Peak in China, as well as a recent ski descent of Denali.
When she's not skiing, Ingrid still stays outside as much a possible, running and biking to relax and keep fit. Ingrid is grateful for the opportunities that her sport brings her, especially getting to travel and ski with "amazing people around the world."
Kasha Rigby has skied since she could walk and began telemark skiing as a teenager. Her passion for skiing and traveling has been the driving force behind most of her adult life.
She began traveling at age 19, leaving college to explore Africa. She then headed to Colorado, where she became involved in telemark racing and extreme-skiing competitions. Kasha joined The North Face Ski Team in 1995 and has since brought her skis all over the U.S., Canada, South America, New Zealand, Russia, Asia, Europe, India and even the Middle East, skiing first descents of some of the world's most revered peaks, including the Five Holy Peaks in Mongolia.
It seems as if Kasha is always packing her bag for a new adventure, a lifestyle that has its pros and cons. When not on expedition Kasha has a garden, lives with friends, and teaches yoga in southern Utah. Come winter she chases snow and keeps a base near Little Cottonwood Canyon.
Ian McIntosh makes no secret of his true love, which also happens to be his athletic specialty. "Big mountain skiing. I like to ski the whole mountain. I like the lines and the turns. To me, that's what skiing is. You take a face and you ski it, top to bottom. You don't stop, and whatever you can catch air on in between, take it."
McIntosh, 24, has been skiing since he was almost two years old. In fact, he says that his mom took him skiing only two months after he started to walk. To him, it seemed natural to grow up in skis, since he lived in a small mountain town not far from the ski-mecca of Banff. Fast forward to Ian's late teensAt an age when most teenagers are a confused mix of unleashed ambition and self-doubt, McIntosh knew exactly what he wanted to do. "I got out of high school and moved to the closest awesome ski resort that I could find," he says during an interview from Whistler, British Columbia, where he lives with several ski buds. After skiing a season, he hit the road. "I traveled abroad, did New Zealand, did the eternal winter thing, and that lifestyle set the pace for what I wanted to do with my life."
At 6'2" and weighing an athletic 185 pounds, McIntosh towers over many other skiers his age and younger, and his physical stature shows in his snow-carving style. "I'm big for what I do, so I like to ski big and strong," he says. "I use my strength to my advantage." McIntosh, with a blend of brute force, style, and raw talent, has seemingly had an advantage over his competition on the world skiing circuit.
He's been competing for only two years, but already has several top crowns to his credit. His name has become a fixture in the top-three standings most places he skis. In the end, looking beyond the competitions and the ski films, it all comes full circle back to one thing: "It's all about being in the powder," says McIntosh.
Tom Wallisch grew up removed from the traditional "resort scene" in the unlikely location of Pittsburgh, Pa. Learning to ski during family trips on winter weekends, Tom quickly developed an obsession. As he got older he indulged it at nearby resorts during weekends and on urban features during the week.
Freshly armed with his High School Diploma, Tom headed west where he enrolled at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. The rail skills that he'd honed in Pittsburgh initially got him noticed, but soon his park skills caught up, making him an up-and-comer on the slopestyle scene.
Exploding in 2009, Tom topped the podium at many events and finished the season as the number one-ranked slopestyle skier in the world. 2010 saw "T-Wall" cement his place at the fore of his sport, with a gold medal in the slopestyle at the European X Games, first place at the Snowbasin stop of the Dew Tour and Freeskier's highly-coveted Skier of the Year title.
Originally from Winchester, MA, Nick Martini began skiing at Cannon Mountain, NH. Though he grew up racing, once he was exposed to freestyle, he hung up the race skis and headed to the park.
His passion for skiing brought him to Colorado where he attends school in Boulder in the fall and skis all winter. At just 20 years old, Nick has proven himself as a heavy hitter in the world of freestyle skiing, placing sixth in the Dew Tour Slopestyle at Mt Snow, fifth in the Dew Tour Rail Jam in Portland, and tenth overall for the Dew Tour in 2009. He also received the 2009 Alpha Dawg Award as one of the top Dew Tour athletes age 18 or younger.
When he's not competing, Nick is busy filming with Poor Boyz Productions and running his own movie company, Stept Productions, with his brother Alex. "When I was given the opportunity to work with The North Face I couldn't have been more excited. The fact that The North Face is dedicating so much to this side of the sport is great."
Growing up in Kamloops, British Columbia, Dana Flahr learned to ski at the age of 8 on the local ski hill. By the time the teen years hit he was already a regular fixture in Whistler, B.C., immersing himself in the scene and learning everything he could about big mountain skiing.
Now, at the wise old age of 23, Dana's determination is paying off big-time, and he's getting the attention and exposure that little 8-year-old dreamed about on the bunny hill. When he's not wowing the judges in freeskiing competitions all over North America, Dana heads into the backcountry to work with photographers and filmmakers. Yet, despite his status as The One to Watch, ( Freeze magazine tagged him as "the best up-and-coming skier" in 2003), Dana remains humble and passionate about skiing, claiming that "there will always be something new to learn" about his sport.
To stay in shape in the off season Dana mountain bikes or hits the gym. He also spends time grooming the next generation of skiers as a coach at Momentum and High North Ski Camps.
Xavier de le Rue, a native of Bayonne, France, is a greatly respected snowboarder equipped with the skills to slay all types of terrain. Originally making his name in the discipline of boardercross, he won multiple world championships, X Games Gold medals and represented his country at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics.
In the past few years it has been his Big Mountain riding that has generated the most attention for Xavier though. He has filmed video parts for Standard Films and Relentless Energy, won the Freeride World Tour three times and has also received Snowboarder Magazine's prized Big Mountain Rider of the Year' award.
When away from the snow Xavier spends time with his wife and young daughter, and gets his adrenaline fix through mountaineering, surfing and downhill mountain biking.
Starting life on an Idaho cattle ranch, Kaitlyn Farrington has grown to become a world class professional snowboarder.
2010 was a breakthrough year: She won a gold medal in the Superpipe at the European Winter X Games, won the overall Dew Cup Halfpipe Title, took second at the U.S. Burton Open and became a fully-fledged member of the U.S. Snowboarding Team.
Possessing an impressive array of tricks, including Cab and frontside 900s, McTwists, as well as switch and backside spins, Kaitlyn has elevated herself into the upper echelon of women's halfpipe competitors. She spent the past summer training in New Zealand and has her sights firmly set on X Games gold in Aspen this year.
In the shadows of Washington powder magnet Mt. Baker is the small town of Glacier, the home town of Lucas DeBari, athlete for The North Face.
First strapping into a snowboard at the age of four, DeBari's undeniable talent was first noticed in his early teens. After several successful years competing in the halfpipe, he grew jaded and decided to cut back - preferring sessions with friends in the backcountry powder to the cutthroat competition circuit. His undeniable park talent had an obvious influence on his riding in the powder.
2008 saw DeBari, receive the prestigious Rookie of the Year' award in Transworld Magazine Rider's Poll and it saw him fulfill a childhood dream by winning the Mt. Baker Legendary Banked Slalom.
Growing up on a cattle ranch in Wyoming, Carter has been snowboarding for over 20 years.
In 2008, he took second at Quiksilver Natural Selection: All Mountain Invitational at Jackson Hole. He has worked with Standard Films, Brain Farm, TGR and Absinthe. A self-proclaimed "mountain man," Carter spends his entire year outdoors. When he's not riding he can be found guiding fly-fishing and working on the ranch.
"Being able to progress in snowboarding and my all around mountain knowledge is very important to me," said Carter. "Exploring new zones, working with the design team, and aligning myself with the people I trust in the mountains is huge for that progression."
David Carrier Porcheron, commonly known as DCP, has been snowboarding for more than 18 years. He has starred in films by Kingpin, Treetop, The Gathering Collective and Mack Dawg Productions. In addition, DCP has been featured on the Weather Channel's popular show, "Epic Conditions."
Though filming is his primary focus, DCP still enjoys competition. He took third place in the 2008 Natural Selection at Jackson Hole. A world-renowned rider, DCP has an arsenal of freestyle skills that he currently brings with him into the backcountry, where he spends most of his snowboard season. Canadian-born DCP splits his time between Squamish, British Columbia, Vail, Colorado, and Costa Rica, with his wife and daughter.
An avid surfer, DCP also skateboards and mountain bikes. Inspired by deep powder, big cliffs and bluebird powder days with the backcountry to himself, he takes his love of snow and outdoors and translates his passion to the environment. Committed to preserving the places he, his friends and family enjoy, DCP works to plant trees and off-set carbon footprints.

Using only the highest quality goose down in all of our products, The North Face® tests each lot of down at three stages of production for loftiness, moisture resistance and ability to regain loft after compression.
